Thanksgiving. If you celebrate, what will your day be filled with today? The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in the U.S…a football game…participating in a Turkey Trot for a good cause…prep and cooking and creating just the right touches? Or maybe a lovely feast with family and friends… volunteering and serving others…traveling from one location to another with whispers of “are we there yet”? Might you be decorating for the December holidays or enjoying a quiet day reading by the fire or maybe you’re a hunter planning to enjoy the quiet of the woods? Or maybe you are scanning the ads and planning your Black Friday outing?
Whatever fun and traditions your day may bring, be sure that if you feel any stress starting to creep in, just take a moment for self-care and simply stop and breathe.
One technique I find helpful is this what I call 4-square breathing: breathe in, hold, breathe out, hold.
“I breathe in peace” to a count of four.
Hold for a count of four.
“I breathe out thanks” to a count of four.
Hold for a count of four.
Rinse and repeat a few times until you are filled with a sense of calm and thanksgiving. It only takes a minute or two. You can change out the feelings (peace and thanks) for whatever resonates better to you. I find this a lovely want to ground and center and nobody even needs to know what I’m doing.
How About a 5 Minute Meditation?
Meditation is great self-care and need only to take a few minutes to bring you great relaxation.
I wish you a relaxing and thankful day!
