Did you know that most of us speak to ourselves and others with certain words and phrases from a place of lack, limitation, and scarcity instead of abundance, freedom, and gratitude? Be compassionate and kind to yourself if you have formed this habit. It’s not really your fault. It’s how most in society work. It’s how we were led by our parents, grandparents, teachers, and significant others. It’s what they learned from their ancestors and passed onto us…unknowingly and likely not meaning any harm.
Did you know that with a bit of focus and practice that you can reprogram your brain to approach life from an empowering space of abundance instead? Here’s a simple example of disempowering vs. empowering language in an everyday phrase. You likely hear often.
We often say “I can’t wait for the holidays to get here” or “I can’t wait to see you”. We say these phrases in excitement, however spoken this way really comes from a place of lack and impatience. Saying “I can’t wait” creates anxiety in our body and indicates we are not satisfied in the present moment. This disempowering phrase can keep you from creating what you do want.
Flip your words to “I look forward to the holidays” or “I’m looking forward to seeing you”. Stop and see how this simple shift feels. I bet it’ll feel better to you. Phrased in this is empowering and creates flow and forward movement toward what you do want.
A challenge for you this month is anytime that you find yourself saying “I can’t wait” to consciously flip your script to “I look forward to” and examine how uplifting and calming that feels. Practice this with family and friends. Start noticing how often you hear this in conversation. You may be surprised. Have fun!
